We’re at it again – as always this time of year, our summer issue becomes a point at which we check in with musicians from across our community who are headed “on the road” – or are staying in – for the summer months. We’ve asked local musicians of all sorts and kinds what they’re most looking forward to this summer, both as listeners and performers, and what their plans are for the 2014/15 season on the other side.

While it’s the same four questions every year, the overwhelming variety of responses we receive demonstrates just how unique each artist is, and just how far their summer travels will take them. For some insight on an array of upcoming plans – some international and some much closer to home.

1. What are we dragging you away from to write this?

A big nap! I’m on tour right now for my Lift album with my co-writer/producer, Robert Walsh, and its been constant activity of media, sound checks, concerts, tear downs, and travel. Sometimes in the middle of the day, when there is a space of sweet nothingness, the fatigue sets in. Maybe, just maybe this will be precious nap time. And then again, maybe not. There is that article I have to write.

2. What, if anything, are you most looking forward to as an audience member between now and September 7?

I always look forward to the eclectic entertainment of Toronto’s Harbourfront Festivals. Whether it’s the Indigenous festival, or the African, or Asian festival, its always good and inspiring to see a wide range of cultures showcased, including my culture! (I’m Métis)

3. How about as a music maker/player

I am excited to be turning my attention to, and using our music in, a healing workshop in June. Its called, “Spring to Life.” Since we’ve been focusing on branding this album as a “positive music” offering, it makes sense that the joyful message has found its way to some healers, spiritual seekers, and motivational movers and shakers. I can’t wait to see how it transpires!

4. What are you already preparing for musically beyond the summer? And (how) do your summer plans tie in with these longer term plans?

In the development of this positive album and finding suitable venues to share our music on a tour, I discovered that “positive music” or “music with a message” didn’t really have a genre to call its own, so I went about creating one. I’ve coined the term, “Music Messengers,” to encompass a new class of musicians who are creating their own brand of positive music. I’m creating an online gathering site, where Music Messengers can find each other and audiences, who need a dose of sunshine in their lives, can find us.

It still astounds me that this initiative has become a big part of my musical aspirations. But I find myself thinking of writing a book, of crossing the country talking to my fellow musicians, and creating a Music Messenger festival some day. What?!

Plus, Lift, with its uplifting message and positive intentions, is destined to find its way into the Self Help industry. I am intrigued at the thought of expanding my musical horizons, and learning more about how music fits in the world of publishing, public speaking and book tours.
